The Traditional Association of Shotokan Karate (TASK) was formed in 1983, with Sensei John van Weenen, then 4th Dan, as its Chief Instructor. Prior to this, he had been a senior instructor with the English Shotokan Karate Association (ESKA).

The Club

From those early beginnings in 1983 with just 190 founder members, TASK grew in strength rapidly, and ten years later boasted over 2000 members spread over central England, in 35 clubs.

In the following years, many of the senior instructors left TASK to form their own associations, taking their students with them, a natural process which left TASK with less than 500 members and 40 Black Belts.

The Association Honbu (main training hall) has been located at the Bunyan Centre in Bedford for the past 30 years.

Shihan van Weenen (Shihan meaning Chief Instructor) now holds the rank of 8th Dan and teaches regularly on Wednesdays at TASK's Honbu. The beginners class is as popular as ever and runs from 6.30pm - 7.30pm every Wednesday, where anyone interested in leaming Karate will be given a warm welcome by Shihan and his senior black belts.
