Sensei Van Weene Karate for Children
Vol.1 basics
(ISBN978-0-9555180-0-3)

Karate for Children Vol. 1 Basics is a totally new concept. With 80 per cent of students practising Karate today being children, the need for a children's book was obvious and long overdue. Written in simple English, it sets out to answer the many questions asked by young people everywhere. Achieving this through delightfully illustrated short stories, each with its own important metaphors, is one of the book's strengths.

All the techniques have been photographed using young people who are practising Karate-ka, and whose grades range from Blue Belt (4th kyu) to Brown Belt (1st kyu). In all, forty basic techniques are covered in detail. Each one is shown in an easy to follow, step by step format, building to the completion of the technique.

Adequate text explains in simple terms how to perform each movement, and this is enhanced by a 'helpful hints' section. Applications (Bunkai) are dealt with separately throughout.

"Karate for Children Vol. 1 - Basics" is the first comprehensive book written especially for children and is enhanced by over 200 colour photographs and illustrations.

Sensei Van Weene The Beginner's Guide to Shotokan Karate
(ISBN 0-951-7660-4-X)

'The Beginner's Guide' was first published in 1983 and quickly became the best seller of that time. Over the years it has been amended and enhanced.

In 2006, the author totally revised its contents, layout and presentation, and in doing so, ensured it's place as the world's best selling beginner's book on Shotokan Karate.

Now in its eighteenth reprint, its 'raison detre' is to take the beginner from white belt to black belt, step by step, reinforcing the techniques of Kihon, Kata and Kumite as taught by his own Sensei.

1800 photographs show in detail the multitude of techniques needed by the beginner in order to reach the coveted black belt.

Sensei Van Weene Advanced Shotokan
Karate Kata
(ISBN 0-951-7660-8-2)

Written in 1985, Advanced Shotokan Karate Kata is as relevant today as it was then. The Kata Bassai Dai, Jion, Jitte, Tekki Shodan, Tekki Nidan and Tekki Sandan are covered in detail.

Possibly the most redeeming feature of this work is the explanation of the intermediate moves, coupled with the applications of the Kata (Bunkai).

Sensei Van Weene In Funakoshi's Footsteps
(ISBN 0-951-7660-9-0 paperback)
(ISBN 0-951-7660-5-8 hardback)

The in-depth autobiography of John van Weenen from his early years to the present day. At the heart of John's life lies Karate-Do and the associated philosophy of its modem-day founding-father - Gichin Funakoshi. Within its 530 pages are countless stories of encounters with some of the worlds greatest Masters, and their undoubted influence in shaping John's thinking.

Despite finding himself 'in a multitude of unenviable situations, his sense of humour is fortunately never far away, and turning a negative into a positive seems to be his lifelong forté.

The final chapters reveal it was no coincidence his path should be influenced massively by the Master's thinking.
