On Monday 17 November, we visited a small local Tokyo museum before taking the Shinkansen bullet train for Kyoto. We had purchased 7-day rail passes before leaving the UK and these were activated today to give us unlimited travel for the rest of our stay in Japan. Although this was a three-hour journey, the train was incredibly smooth and comfortable. Again we witnessed the courtesy of the Japanese people, their "trolley-dollies" even bowing as they entered and left each carriage. We settled into the Kyoto Royal Hotel & Spa, then took a walking tour of the local area, savouring the very different atmosphere of this ancient capital city

On Sunday 16 November, we visited the WKF World Championships at the Budokan in Tokyo. There was a great view of the five arenas and we saw Tikki Donovan coaching the national squad. Afterwards we toured the adjacent gardens incorporating a shrine and what amounted to a Japanese car boot sale. One of our party purchased a sword which we subsequently found impossible to export, and the tale of the wandering sword is an epic in itself, to be related another day. Sunday was the last of our five nights in Tokyo, after which three of us were to depart for Kyoto and the other two for Osaka.

On Saturday 15 November, we travelled to Kancho Kanazawas dojo and were astounded to meet the master himself as we were standing outside. We were privileged to be taught by Sensei Shinji Tanaka and found that the students were accomplished and friendly, as one might expect.

On Friday 14 November, we took a trip to Mount Fuji and ascended the Mount Kachi Kachi Ropeway to an ancient shrine. From this mountain, glorious views of Fuji-San were sampled and it was a time for relaxation and reflecting on how fortunate we were to be in this wonderful country, which had seemed just a dream over many yeras of training.
